Just when we thought the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class had reached its zenith, AMG releases the most powerful and aggressive-looking version yet – the SL65 AMG Black.

The recently-facelifted Mercedes-Benz SL-Class has been broadly applauded for its sportier styling, and in the case of the SL63 AMG, propelled by a storming 386 kW 6,2-litre V8, aficionados lack for little in terms of outright performance. For power-obsessed high rollers, there’s the 600 kW SL65 AMG, which many affluent folk would buy only to be able to say they own the most expensive ‘Benz money can buy.

Surely the SL63 and SL65 AMGs should satisfy the prestige and performance requirements of the (very much) enriched few? Well, in case there are any discontented ‘Benz customers out there… AMG has just released details of the new SL 65 AMG Black Series.

The Black Series from AMG represents the most extreme performance models that the Three-Pointed Star has to offer. The folks at Affalterbach take a standard AMG model, which is no slouch, and they give its more power, stiffen up the suspension and streamline the package as much as they dare. Sounds like a good formula, and it is!

Just by looking at the SL Black, one can tell it means business. Flared wheel arches and massive air intakes are everywhere as well as a fancy carbon-fibre spoiler, which I don’t doubt is there for a reason. Actually, there are 493 reasons and just so you know that’s 15 more reasons than you got in the SLR McLaren supercar, yikes!

That’s right, folks – under the SL65 Black’s bonnet, there’s a 6,0-litre twin-turbo V12 that churns out 493 kW and 1000 N.m of torque which, apart from being able to restart the sun, will also be able to accelerate the uberBenz from zero to 100 km/h in 3,9 seconds and onto healthy top speed of 320 km/h. The expected price will be considerably more than the standard SL65 AMG, which itself costs just over R2 million. The whole car has been lightened to help it get to that sub-4 second 0-100 km/h time… aluminium has substituted steel where possible and there’s a whole lot of carbon fibre on the inside and out. Unfortunately for those of you who enjoy the wind in you hair, you are going to have to look elsewhere. Amid its weight-shedding programme, AMG removed the folding hard top too. On the upside, fellow sun worshippers, the SL65 AMG Black does benefit from fatter tackies, adjustable suspension and enlarged brakes...
